Axial SCX10 vs. SCX24 vs. SCX30: Which One Should You Buy?
Buying your first RC crawler can be overwhelming.
At first glance, the Axial SCX24, SCX30, and SCX10 all look similar. They wear realistic bodies, use four-wheel drive, and are built for crawling over rocks and obstacles. But after owning and driving all three, I can confidently say they deliver very different experiences.
The question isn't simply "Which crawler is better?"
It's "What kind of RC adventure do you want?"
If you're trying to decide, this guide will walk through the strengths and weaknesses of each platform, share our firsthand impressions, and help you choose the crawler that's right for your style of driving.
If you'd like to see the trucks in action, we also have a YouTube reviews.
Understanding the Difference Between 1/24, 1/30, and 1/10 Scale
The scale doesn't just determine the size of the truck—it changes the entire driving experience.
A 1/24-scale crawler is small enough to drive across books, couch cushions, and homemade obstacle courses in your living room.
A 1/30-scale crawler bridges the gap, offering better outdoor performance while remaining incredibly portable.
A 1/10-scale crawler is designed to take on real hiking trails, muddy terrain, rocks, streams, and larger obstacles that closely resemble full-size off-road adventures.
As the scale increases, so do capability, realism, and the variety of terrain you can confidently tackle.

Axial SCX30
The SCX30 surprised us.
It's noticeably more capable outdoors than the SCX24 while remaining small enough to throw into a backpack.
We found ourselves enjoying it on lighter trails, smaller rocks, and moderate inclines.
Eventually, we upgraded ours to improve performance, which speaks to the platform's potential.
If you primarily crawl in your backyard or occasionally venture onto local trails, the SCX30 offers a fun balance between portability and capability.

Our Experience With Each Platform
Axial SCX24
When we first picked up the SCX24, it was easy to see why it's so popular.
It's affordable, easy to transport, and has one of the largest aftermarket communities in RC crawling.
But after spending more time with it, we realized it simply wasn't the experience we were looking for.
We enjoy taking our crawlers outdoors—through mud, around ponds, across rocks, and into terrain that feels like a scaled-down Jeep adventure.
The SCX24 wasn't built for that type of driving.
Instead, it excels at indoor courses, tabletop obstacles, and smaller backyard terrain.
If your goal is crawling inside your house during the winter, it's an excellent option.
If your goal is outdoor exploration, you'll probably outgrow it fairly quickly.

Axial SCX10 III Base Camp V2
This is the crawler we'd recommend without hesitation.
The SCX10 completely changes the experience.
Instead of looking for tiny obstacles, you're suddenly driving through real puddles, muddy trails, streams, and rocky terrain.
Because it's waterproof, we don't hesitate to explore around the ocean, lakes, ponds, or after heavy rain.
The factory LED lights make evening trail runs more immersive, while the larger tires and suspension allow it to recover from situations where our smaller crawlers simply tipped over.
It feels less like driving a toy and more like taking a miniature off-road vehicle on an actual adventure.
If you're planning to stay in the hobby, this is the platform we believe offers the best long-term value.
